A Game of Thrones

Martin writes wonderfully, although seems a little hesitant at times to venture out with unique and interesting metaphors and little details; some of the descriptions used were quite cliché by now. He also seemed a little prone to 'telling' instead of 'showing - many of the longer combat scenes dragged on a little, could've used more spice.
Although his characters are deep and conflicted and realistic, I almost feel they needed more time just on them and their thoughts. More than once Jon or Dany would change an opinion very suddenly, without much explanation as to why they were singing a different song. It was a little jarring at times.
Nonetheless, it was a brilliant read and I'm looking forward to starting on the next book.
